IT’S NOT JUST IMPORTANT for companies to “do” social media. It’s important for them to do it right.
Fred Schultz, owner of Victorian business Fred’s Tiny Houses (pictured above) is a great example of an industry leader who understands the value of dynamic social media content. His Facebook page has very successfully built a highly engaged community.
Many companies, however, fall short of the standard set by people such as Fred. We see lots of companies make many of the same mistakes on social media. Here are the top five.
1: FORGETTING TO BE SOCIAL
Social media begins with “social.” Many companies forget that great social media is about two-way relationships. Being excellent on social involves engaging with the most important people out there: your customers.
2: SPREADING YOURSELF TOO THIN
If your business is rushing to launch accounts for every new app or website, you might be doing it wrong. It is better to have two or three well-maintained social media presences than half a dozen that are dormant.
3: NOT FEEDING THE BEAST ENOUGH
Social media accounts need content to survive. Without regular posting and a content strategy, you risk having your social media accounts wither on the vine.
4: FEEDING THE BEAST TOO MUCH
If you inundate your Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn accounts with constant information, you might overwhelm customers and put them off. Best to decide on a healthy number of updates for each platform and be consistent.
5: TALKING LIKE A ROBOT
Customers like colour and personality on social media, so it’s important to give them interesting content. If you’re in doubt, remember above all else to simply sound human.
